Jones County is located in western South Dakota. It is named for George W. Jones, a United States senator from Iowa.
The seat and largest city is Murdo. It is both the most recently established and least populous county in South Dakota.
Jones County borders Stanley, Lyman, Mellette, Jackson and Haakon Counties.
Main highways through the county include I-90 and US-83
